But his effort, work-rate and enthusiasm can’t be faulted and that will be of particular significance in Saturday’s 12.30pm kickoff – not only because it’s a no-love-lost affair between two rivals but also because of Liverpool’s notorious venom in attack.

Our poll, however, suggests Manchester United fans are thinking with head over heart. While 29% liked the idea of Lingard starting on Merseyside, a far more significant 71% didn’t. Admittedly, with United performing so well going forward this season, it’s hard to think of a role for Lingard in their regular starting XI.
